DescriptionSaint George was a soldier in the Roman army who later became venerated as a Christian martyr. He was born in AD275. This particular depiction represents him on horse back slaying a dragon.The legend goes that a dragon had made its home at a lake near the city of Silene (now modern day Libya). In order to retrieve water, the villagers regularly had to sacrifice sheep to the dragon before it allowed them to pass.Eventually, no more sheep could be found. The villagers then fell to drawing lots, with the losers being selected to feed the dragon. Saint George, then a traveling knight, was able to slay the dragon and thus sparing the villagers from the untold misery that the dragon had exacted upon their village.
